The Craig County softball team picked up a big win over Narrows last week as they split two Pioneer District games. The Rockets also dropped a game to Giles and comes into the week with a 2-3 record.
Last Tuesday at home the Rockets blasted Narrows, 16-6. The Green Wave scored two runs in the top of the first but the Rockets answered with three in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Craig then scored three more in the second and five in the third for an 11-2 lead. Narrows scored four in the fourth but the Rockets put five more on the board in the fourth and shut out the Wave in the top of the fifth to win by slaughter rule.
“Our defense was much better and we hit well as a team,” said Rocket coach Elaina Wolfe-Carper. “Annalese Zimmerman pitched against Narrows and did well.”
Zimmerman went the distance to earn the win, allowing just five earned runs. She scattered seven hits and walked three.
Offensively, cleanup hitter Aleah Owens had a big game. She was four-for-four at the plate and scored four runs. Ashlyn Keen had three hits, including a double, and drove in four. Kallie Fisher also had three hits and scored four times and Jenna Boitnotte and Annika Zimmerman had two hits each. Boitnotte had a double and three RBIs.
On Thursday the Rockets hosted Giles and things didn’t go as well. The visiting Spartans scored 11 runs in the first inning and five in the second as Craig lost 17-1. Neveah Hypes pitched the first inning and Boitnotte pitched the second and of the 16 runs allowed only one was earned.
“Defense killed us against Giles,” said WolfeCarper. “Both Nevaeh and Jenna pitched well, but we just weren’t making plays behind them.”
Boitnotte, Owens and Hypes had Craig’s only hits in the game, with Nevaeh driving in Keen for the only run.
The Rockets were scheduled to be back on the diamond Tuesday at Eastern Montgomery, then they’re back home next Tuesday, April 29, to host Bath County.
