Field of Dreams will be the location for the Easter event.

The grass is growing at the Field of Dreams. That’s where all the eggs will be hidden for the Easter egg hunt. The Craig County Rescue Squad is again hosting a free Easter event for the community. The event will start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 19. “We will have our touch a truck so that the community can come and get on the ambulance and fire trucks,” shared Trace Bellisai.

“We will also have yard games for people to play, and a bounce house and inflatable obstacle course for the kids,” he continued. They will be selling hotdogs, chips, and drinks, all to benefit the Rescue Squad. The Easter Egg Hunt will start at 12 noon, with separate areas for different age groups. There will be some competition games such as 3 legged races, where there are potential prizes! All that fun and even the Easter Bunny will be there for pictures!

If you didn’t know, Craig County emergency services are primarily covered by two rescue squads, a paid staff (Craig County Emergency Services – Station 9), and the Volunteer station (Craig County Rescue Squad – Station 8). Paint Bank also has a rescue squad, but they only average a couple of calls a month. Paid staff cover Monday through Friday and the volunteers cover the weekends, in addition to during the week if the paid staff get overwhelmed. The volunteer station runs around 16 calls per month.

Members can become certified in EVOC as drivers (Emergency Vehicle Operators Certification), or as a medical provider. The rescue squad members come from every level of EMS which include Emergency Medical Responders (EMR), Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s), Advanced EMT’s, Intermediate EMT’s, and Paramedics.

The rescue squad is currently holding an Emergency Medical Responder course, and they hold an EMT class every fall starting in August. They also hold EVOC courses regularly, and all members are required to have a CPR certification, which they also host classes for. “There are currently 10 members without a medical certification, of which half of them (6) are students working towards their EMR or EMT certifications,” Bellisai stated.

“There are absolutely opportunities for youth under 18, and we actually have a few “Junior” members who took our EMT class. The minimum age to take an EMT class is 16, so they can even become an EMT while they’re still in High School!” he continued.

“Aside from that, we can have youth 14-16 ride along with us to see what EMS is like, and they can take a CPR class with us.”

The rescue squad is always in need of new members and donations. More volunteers help ensure calls don’t go unanswered (when local squads not available, the county must rely on mutual aid from surrounding counties such as Roanoke and Botetourt). Donations are a large part of the operational budget to fund things like medical supplies, equipment, etc.

Public events like the Easter event introduce the rescue squad to the community and encourage volunteer participation. Donations for the Easter event of plastic eggs, egg stuffers, and candy can be brought to the Circuit Court Clerk’s office in the Courthouse. Monetary donations can be made on their website
