Spring is in the air and big change is about to happen in New Castle. Mike’s Dog House has expanded to a new location, a move to the corner of Salem Avenue (Rt 311) and Market Street (Rt 621). The building is painted outside with fresh colors and the upgrades inside are ready for action.

Family traditions include flavors and styles of ice cream. Some like vanilla. Some like chocolate, and some like bubblegum birthday cake with sprinkles. Mike’s has a reputation for delivering creative and tasty frozen treats. Surprises await as the opening of the new shop nears. Applications have been taken for new staffing. Watch for signs early in April about the new menu options and some of the planned surprises. Mike Kendall shared with the Town Council in February that he expected to be open by April. “We’ll be open Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a few additions to the menu,” Kendall stated.

Another valued shop in New Castle is taking a much needed vacation this week. The ladies at Lemon and Vale Cakery will be closed April 1-9, to reopen Thursday, April 10. Their cinnamon rolls on Sundays, cake slices, soups and chicken salad have made their mark on local appetites. Regularly open Thursday through Monday, they’re busy creating tasty treats in coffees, teas, and sweets. On their return, the Easter goodies will be delightful.

As the weather warms and more time is spent outside, recovering from the isolation of the winter months, planning for garden goodies becomes a priority. Vegetables, fruits and culinary herbs can be grown and shared by family and neighbors. Blueberries and strawberries will soon be available to plant, and may be producing fruit quickly.

Pick-your-own berry farms later in the season encourage taking the juicy fruits home to try in your favorite recipe. Craig County hosts several farms with opportunities to visit. Many bring products from the farm to the farmers market on Main Street, opening in May. Connect with local growers, farmers and eateries for the best experience Craig County offers.
