Carla Marie Mitchell, age 61 of New Castle, went to be with the Lord, on March 21, 2025, peacefully in her home. She was born on February 10, 1964, in Roanoke, Virginia to Bobby G. Huffman and Juanita Huffman.
Carla was a teacher’s aide at McCleary Elementary School. She was affectionately known as “Ms. Carla” even after she retired, and the children had grown up. In addition to that job, she was also a server at the Swinging Bridge Restaurant for seven years in Paint Bank, VA. She attended both Lighthouse Baptist Church and Grace Assembly of God in New Castle.
Carla cherished every moment spent with her family and friends. She had an active role in all her grandchildren’s lives, with many sleepovers at Nana’s house. She looked forward to trips with her sisters, where they would dance, laugh, and stay up late reminiscing about the good times. Carla was the pillar of strength in the family and will be greatly missed by all.
Carla fought a 22-year battle with cancer. It started as breast cancer and returned years later as bone cancer. She had countless surgeries, including a jaw replacement and hip replacement. In total she had 61 chemo treatments. Carla was the epitome of strength. Throughout the years, she didn’t complain. If asked how she was doing, she would always answer with a simple “I’m okay”. Her faith in Jesus and the love she had for her family kept her strong through her tribulations.
Carla is preceded in death by her parents; her grandson, Landen Mitchell; and brother-in-law, Perry Hypes. She is survived by three sons, Michael Bryant and wife, Heather, Brian Mitchell and wife Trista, and Joshua Mitchell and wife Tracey; sisters, Teresa Crawford and fiancé Matt, and Sheila Hypes; one brother, Bobby Huffman, Jr. and wife April; grandchildren, Kaleigh Bryant, Bryanna Mitchell, Axel Mitchell, Jensen Mitchell, Adam Mitchell, and Brooklyn Mitchell; one great-granddaughter, Reagan Gailmard; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Paitsel Funeral Home with Pastor Lee Looney officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior 2-3 PM.
