After the March 6 meeting of the Craig County Board of Supervisors was called to order, the minutes of the Feb. 6 meeting were approved. In attendance were Board Chair, Jesse Spence, Vice Chair, Jordan Labiosa, Jason Matyas and Keith Dunbar. Absent was Carl Bailey representing the Potts Mountain District. The board heard a report from Brian Blevins about VDOT activities. Trace Bellassai reported on the technology committee research on a new Craig County website. Woody Lipps shared that the Craig Valley Railbed Trail committee continues to gather information and expects VDOT to hold an informational session sometime in June.
In old business, the board approved the Tire Amnesty Day on April 5 and the Hooked on Fishing event for May 10. The public was invited to comment on the revision to the DUI reimbursement change to code with no comments and the board approved Ordinance 25-01. The treasurer’s report was reviewed and the Board of Supervisors schedule was released.
Due to activity during the February 6th meeting, Board Member Jason Matyas read a prepared statement in regards to the decision on the land use issue. The land use item was added to the agenda just before the meeting was begun, which came as a surprise to community members. Matyas was absent at that meeting and wanted to clarify his position on the issue. Vice Chair Labiosa had added the item to the agenda to make a motion ending the issue, as budget work sessions were coming up. Both Matyas’ and Labiosa’s comments and others from the Hear The Public section of the meeting will be available when the minutes are posted on the county website.
The board held the first of several public work sessions to discuss the 2025-2026 budget. The next is scheduled for Thursday, March 20 at 5:30 p.m. with the school board and VDOT.
