Girls drop three in busy week of basketball

The Craig County girls got three basketball games in last week but couldn’t pick up a win. With the three losses Craig dropped to 1-14 with a scheduled trip to Narrows on Monday of this week that was too late for publication.

The Rockets opened with a home game against Bath last week and fell 42-32. Daileigh Donithan led the Rockets with 12 points and Brooklyn Cayton had 10 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Jenna Boitnotte had eight boards.

“We came alive in the second half,” said coach Erica Crabtree. “We didn’t give ourselves many scoring opportunities in the second quarter but we bounced back in the third and especially in the fourth. It was just too late to get over the hump. I am proud of the team for not giving up and fighting until the end despite being down.”

On Thursday of last week the girls played at Giles and lost 56-26. Gracie Huffman had seven points and Donithan and Kallie Fisher had a half dozen each. Boitnotte was big on the glass again with nine boards, Cayton had eight and Huffman had seven rebounds.

On Saturday the Rockets played the Bears in Bland and dropped a 58-16 decision. Donithan led with seven points and Cayton had 10 rebounds and three steals.

“We had a busy week last week against some tough opponents,” said Crabtree. “We fought but just didn’t have enough in the tank. Although our record doesn’t show it we have improved on the little things like rebounding, steals and assists. We now just need to put the ball in the basket.

“I’m proud of the girls for digging deep and finishing this season despite the rough patch we have been in.”
