The Craig County basketball teams will be in action in the coming week as folks celebrate Christmas and New Year.

The boys’ team will play in the Brookville tournament December 27 and 28. The first night Staunton River and Appomattox will play at 5:30 pm followed by Craig against  host Brookville. On Saturday, December 28, the two winners will play for the championship and Fridays’ losers will meet for third place. The tournament is hosted by Brookville coach Cameron Shepherd, a former head basketball coach at Craig County High School.

Next Monday, December 30, both the boys and girls will play at Faith Christian School on Mountain View Road in Roanoke. The girls will open at 5:30 pm with the boys to follow.

Last week the girls dropped a 27-25 game to Eastern Montgomery in New Castle. Brooklyn Cayton and Gracie Huffman had six points each while Kallie Fisher had five points, five rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks. Cayton, Jenna Boitnotte and Daileigh Donithan had six rebounds each for the Rockets as they fell to 0-5.

“We started out slow and dug ourselves a hole early in the game,” said coach Erica Crabtree. “We came out fighting in the second half and closed the gap but missed a few key shots throughout the game and came up short at the buzzer.

“We have more people in the scoring column and more people are rebounding. We now just have to put everything together for the full 32 minutes of play.”

The boys fell to 0-6 with a 51-22 loss at East Mont on December 16 and a 73-55 loss to Giles in Pearisburg a night later.

Due to early Christmas deadlines some scores are missing this week. The boys played James River on Thursday, December 19, and the girls played in the James River Christmas tournament.  Look for updates on those games next week.
