Parry McCluer passed Craig County in the Virginia High School League Region 1C football ratings last Friday night. Parry McCluer took a 37-6 win in New Castle.
With the loss Craig dropped from fifth to sixth in the rankings while the Blues moved up from sixth to the third spot. Craig’s opponent this week, Bath County, remains at number one with a 6-0 record and a rating of 20.3.
George Wythe remains in second place in the rankings at 20.0. Pioneer teams still hold four of the top six spots with Parry McCluer third at 17.1, Narrows fifth at 16.3 and Craig County sixth at 15.2. Grayson County of the Mountain Empire dropped from third to fourth.
With a 5-2 record the Rockets are still in a great spot to make the playoffs. The top eight schools get in and currently the ninth ranked school is Fort Chiswell at 1-6 with a 10.2 ranking, well behind the Rockets. Craig can even move up with a win in either of their next two games, at home against Bath County this Friday or at Narrows on November 1. The Rockets end the regular season at home against Meadow Bridge of West Virginia. Meadow Bridge is 4-2 and one of their losses was a 68-12 loss to Bath at home.
Bath will present a challenge for the Rockets this Friday in New Castle. The Chargers are coached by former Bath player Jake Phillips, who went on to play quarterback at William & Mary. Jake is in his third year as head coach at his alma mater and he took over a team that won just one game in 2021and turned things around. The Chargers won four games his first year, then went 9-2 last year and are unbeaten after six games this season. Bath has allowed just 18 points this season while scoring 345.
Coach Jim Fisher has also brought success to Craig. The Rockets need just one more win to match their most since they went 6-5 in 2010.
