The Craig County boys saw their basketball season come to an end with an 83-43 loss to George Wythe in the Class 1C tournament in Wytheville last week. The Rockets finished the season with a 5-19 record while George Wythe finished as region runner-up and will advance to the Class 1 state tournament this weekend.

“George Wythe was a really good team,” said Craig County coach Ryan Frazier. “We struggled from the tip with the full court pressure that George Wythe plays. They kept the press on until halftime, as they already had a sizable lead.”

In the second half the Rockets were able to put some points on the board, but could not close the gap. Frazier was able to get everyone in the game late, where CJ Armes and Chris Matheney scored six points each to close out the year.

“It obviously did not go how we planned, but to see those two get some baskets in the last game was enjoyable for the whole team,” said Frazier. “We really enjoyed having those two this year.”

Matthew Lucas scored 20 points while Seth Parsons, Talon Ritter, and Zach Peters had three each and Jaycob Wolfe chipped in with two.

Zach Peters was named to the All-Pioneer District second team.

“We finished out the year finishing fourth in the regular season and fourth in the tournament to earn our second straight regional berth,” said Frazier. “This was our ultimate goal this year, but admittedly we expected to have a better record than we ended up with. Our goal for next year will be to make it three years in a row”

Craig had players make the All-Pioneer District team this year. Lucas made first team all-district for the second year in a row and Peters made second team all-district.

“We are very proud of these guys and what they earned this year, and with some good offseason work I feel we can get even more on there next year,” said Frazier.
