Craig County High School was able to get on the diamond, track and pitch last week as the unseasonably cold spring weather held off for a few days.

The baseball and track teams had their first outings while the soccer team was able to play for the second time. The softball team has yet to play a game under new coach Elaina Wolfe-Carper, and won’t until the team returns from spring break next Monday in Covington. Their home opener will now be April 12 against Parry McCluer.

“We didn’t get a game in for the whole month of March,” said Wolfe-Carper. “The girls are really anxious to play.”

The baseball team finally got a game in at Auburn last week, and the Rockets scored a run in the top of the first to take the lead. However, the Eagles came back to score six runs against three Rocket pitchers in the bottom of the inning as they went on to a 14-3 win over Craig.

The Rockets had three hits for the day, one each by Dalton McPherson, Dakota Henderson and Christian Fisher. Henderson also scored twice.

The boys will also return to action next Monday, following spring break, with a game at Covington. They’ll host Parry McCluer on April 12.

Craig County’s Brianna Charlton placed fourth in the triple jump (26-7) at last week’s track meet at Eastern Montgomery High School. Charlton would later win the 100 m dash with a time of 13.38.

The track team participated in a meet at Eastern Montgomery last week. The girls were sixth and the boys were seventh out of nine teams participating in Elliston.

Craig County’s Autumn Huffman took second in the discus with a toss of 108’ 2” and third in the shot put with a heave of 32’ 7.5”. Brianna Charlton came in first in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.38 and Lynsey Taylor was third in the 1,600.

For the boys, Ben Deplazes came in second in the 200 meters with a time of 24.56.

“Overall we had a very good showing for our first meet,” said coach Melissa Hubbard.

The soccer team played at Auburn last Thursday and dropped a 9-0 decision to the host Eagles. Craig is now 0-2 and looking for the first goal for the brand new program. Charlton and Logan Kitler played in the game on Thursday after competing in the track meet on Wednesday.

“You have to give them a lot of credit,” said coach Robin Nobles. “They ran in the track meet but still came out and played for the soccer team despite being tired from the day before.”

The soccer team returns to action on April 12 as well with a home game against Parry McCluer.
