The Craig County basketball teams are taking some time off for Christmas. The Rockets concluded their pre-holiday schedule with a doubleheader in Montcalm last week, but results were too late for early holiday deadlines.

The girls were 4-3 prior to that doubleheader after defeating Roanoke Catholic Tuesday night, December 19, 58-30. The girls had lost to the Celtics in Roanoke, but they turned things around in New Castle with a dominating win. Craig led 24-10 at the half and won going away.

Tierrney Zysk led the Rockets with 20 points and Kaylee Pauley had 15 points and seven assists. Taylor Sloss had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The girls will be back in action on Thursday to host Auburn, and on Saturday, December 30, Rural Retreat is here. That will be a 2 pm start for the jayvees with the varsity to follow.

The boys were still looking for a win prior to the Montcalm game, but they continue to improve. The Rockets lost at Alleghany on December 18, 68-41, but that was a big improvement over the first meeting, in New Castle, when the Rockets lost by 45 points.

“We played a lot better,” said coach Ryan Frazier. “We played our best game of the year, it just so happened to be against the best team we’ve played. They even had to call a couple timeouts in the first quarter when we took the lead.”

Dalton McPherson and Noah Nichols led the scoring.

The boys do not play over the break, returning January 3rd with a game at Covington.
