Carla Ritzler, Library Director, with the help of Dr. Seuss and his book Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

Librarians sometimes have a funny way of viewing things through books. Here’s a quote from Dr. Seuss that I think describes Craig County fairly well:

“Congratulations!

Today is your day.

You’re off to Great Places!

You’re off and away!

You have brains in your head.

You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself any direction you choose.

You’re on your own. And you know what you know.

And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.”

We take care of our own, and we take care of each other. We are independent, and we get things done.

“Except when you don’t.

Because, sometimes, you won’t.

I’m sorry to say so

But, sadly, it’s true

That Bang-ups

And Hang-ups

Can happen to you.

You can get all hung up

In a prickle-ly perch.

And your gang will fly on.

You’ll be left in a Lurch.

Craig County Public Library knows this feeling, and we are sure we are not alone. Sometimes I get to thinking that other groups and people could have the ideas or resources to get us through our tough patches, and I know we have ideas and resources to get others through their slumps as well.

Craig Library already works with a variety of organizations to enhance each other’s work. A prime example is the Visitor’s Center. I work closely with Diane Givens and Ann Harrell to make sure the library has a good supply of maps, brochures and flyers to hand out to people driving through the county. Another good example is Headstart. They provide trained leaders to work with families and children while we provide materials and a place for them to gather for activities.

With the library board’s attention once again focused on expansion plans, our thoughts return to how we all can work together in order to create something new – something that better serves everyone. As in the examples above, I am convinced we should partner with the many county organizations to meet each other’s needs. Our need now is to hear from all these groups before we develop our plans and goals so we can include everyone in a Craig Center for Community Connections!

“You can get so confused

That you’ll start in to race

Down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace

And grind on for miles across weirdish wild space,

Headed, I fear, toward a most useless place.

The Waiting Place…

NO!

That’s not for you!

Somehow you’ll escape

All that waiting and staying.

You’ll find the bright places

Where Boom Bands are playing.

With banner flip-flapping,

Once more you’ll ride high!

Ready for anything under the sky.

Ready because you’re that kind of a guy!”

Library News:

The library hours may be unpredictable on Wednesdays until we get more volunteers to keep the doors open. Please bear with us! If you are interested in a position as library assistant, please inquire at the library.

Come by the library for a treat on Halloween compliments of the Board of Trustees! Thanks to Clay Goodman for being available for us during these last few months.

Thank you to Hill Studio for partnering with Craig County on a planning Grant for a future Community Center! The Friends of the Library are excited to work with them and we invite you to join us in these plans. Drop us a note at craiglibrary@swva.net if you wish to help!

The Book Barn can be opened any day we are open for browsing. The books are organized by author and subject, so come and get your books! Convert donated books to cash for library support!
