Letter to the Editor: Overwhelmed with gratitude

Now six months into my role as Executive Director – American Red Cross of Virginia, Roanoke and New River Valleys, I pause to reflect on the recent events that have transpired and the incredible response from our community. In just the last month, the American Red Cross has launched a wide-ranging relief effort to help people devastated by three historic, back-to-back hurricanes – Harvey, Irma, and Maria.

We are part of a large team of agencies and organizations responding to provide help to communities turned upside down by these three category 4 storms. In addition, we’ve supported the Mexican Red Cross in its response to the earthquakes, and the people affected by the mass shooting in Las Vegas.

These efforts and support are made possible through volunteers and donations from our community. And the response has been overwhelming. From car washes to telethons to direct donations, members of our community have raised tens of thousands of dollars towards the relief efforts. Without this, the American Red Cross could not provide shelter, feeding and emotional comfort to the thousands of people affected by these tragedies. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the American Red Cross, and am overwhelmed with gratitude for the support we have received from our community.

With your support we will continue to be on the ground providing care to those in need for the weeks and months ahead as people struggle to recover from these devastating events. Thank you from the American Red Cross

-Jackie Grant
