Members of the Radford Fire Department, including Chief Rodney Haywood, gather with Councilman Keith Marshall for a presentation of a city proclamation of National Fire Safety Week at Monday’s Radford City Council meeting.

Radford city council is bringing focus on household fire safety, urging all residents to have a plan in the event of a fire at home.

At Monday’s city council meeting, several members of the Radford Fire Department were presented with a council proclamation of Fire Safety week in the City of Radford, set for Oct. 8- 14. This year’s national theme, “Every second counts, plan two ways out,” serves to educate the public about ” the basic but essential importance for households to have a fire escape plan and two exits from each room.”

According to the proclamation, the majority of household fires occur between the hours of 11 p.m. And 7 a.m., making pre-planning particularly important.

Also at Monday’s meeting, council approved the Radford Transit contract with New River Valley Community Services. The next city council meeting is set for Monday, Oct. 9.
