The Craig County volleyball team has the hardest part of the schedule out of the way and it hoping to make a strong late season run.

The Rockets were scheduled to play at Eastern Montgomery on Tuesday. On Thursday of this week they have a doubleheader at Highland, followed by a trip to Narrows next Tuesday, October 3. The girls will be home for the first time in a month when they host Covington next Wednesday, October 5.

“I think we can beat any of these teams,” said Craig coach Geoff Boyer. “I’m looking forward to our next 10 matches or so. They’re all winnable. It’s time for us to make a run.”

Craig had seven days off a loss at Christiansburg last week that dropped the girls to 1-11. The Blue Demons beat the Rockets 25-19, 25-10 and 25-19. Craig had leads in the first and third sets, including a 14-7 edge in the third set before the Demons went on a run.

“We lost but we played a lot better,” said Boyer. “If we were playing to 17 we would have won two of those sets.”

Taylor Sloss led Craig with eight assists, four kills and a block. Haleigh Smith and Jaci McAlwee had four kills each.

Craig is hoping to finish the season strong and make some noise in the playoffs. Auburn is hosting the regional and the Rockets have played well there.

“I’m glad to see the region is at Auburn,” said Boyer. “We’re playing a lot better and we’ve done well there.”
