Botetourt Count Circuit Court Judge Malfourd “Bo” Trumbo announced Monday he’ll be retiring from the bench after nearly 14 years.
Trumbo, who lives in Fincastle and served in the Virginia House of Delegates and Virginia Senate, was Chief Judge of he 25th Circuit Court of Virginia from 2013 until September 1 of this year, a position he gave up because of his pending retirement.
Trumbo provided an extensive interview for reporters Monday (see next week’s Herald for details of that interview) when he made his announcement.
Trumbo, who will be 63 in November, said he will become involved in mediation practice after he steps down from the bench.
He said he has already notified the bar associations and elected officials in the judicial district that he’s retiring in the hopes the local bars will have recommendations to fill his seat that the General Assembly can consider when it meets in January.
Trumbo was first appointed in 2004 to fill the seat that became vacant when Judge Duncan M. Byrd Jr. died in July 2003.
Trumbo had a private law practice in Fincastle from 1984-2004 when he was appointed judge.
He was served in the House of Delegates one term, from 1990-1991 then was elected to the State Senate and served there from 1992-2003. He did not seek re-election to the Senate in 2003, and was appointed judge in 2004.
Trumbo holds a BA and his law degree from the College of William and Mary.
He is the former chair of the Senate Rules Committee, and a former member of the Senate Courts of Justice, Finance, Transportation, and Rehabilitation and Social Services Committees.
His former affiliations include the Task Force on the Structure of the Judicial System, Commission on Courts in the 21st Century; Virginia Criminal Sentencing Commission; Judicial Compensation, Retirement and Insurance Committee for the Judicial Conference of Virginia; Virginia Committee on District Courts; Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Board of Trustees; Jamestown 2007 Steering Committee, and Federal Jamestown 400th Commemoration Commission; Blue Ridge Economic Development Commission; and Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations on the Condition and Future of Virginia Cities.
Trumbo will continue to live with his wife Susan in Fincastle.
