The Craig County golf team will open the season next week when Eastern Montgomery hosts a Pioneer District match on Tuesday, August 15.
Fred Moler returns to coach the Rockets and he has three starters returning from last year’s team, including returning senior Mike Henson.
“I have seen him a few times at the golf course this summer working on his game,” said Moler.
Juniors Winston Palmer and Noah Moler also return.
“Winston is very bright and easy to coach,” said Moler. “Mike and Winston both should contribute greatly this year. They have competed for a while now, and they have several matches under their belts.”
Craig’s top returnee is Noah Moler, the coaches’ son. A rising junior, he’s been the top scorer on the Craig County team for the past two seasons, and he was very busy on the links during the summer season.
“Noah has been playing in three different tours this summer,” said Fred. “He finished in 10th place in the Andrew Haley Memorial, second place in the Blue Ridge Junior Golf Tour Championship, and won a tournament in the Roanoke Valley Junior Golf Association at Hidden Valley against the area’s best players.”
Noah won four matches last year and made it to the regionals the last two years.
“He is working hard to get to the state tournament this year,” said coach Moler.
The three returnees have played together for three years and Fred hopes for great improvement this fall.
“We hope to compete to win some matches this year,” he said.
