 ‘Kiss Me, Kate’ opens on Attic state this week

David Fisher plays dual roles as Fred Graham and Petruchio, with Sara Coleman portraying Lilli Vanessi and Katherine, “Kate,” in this play-within-a-play, “Kiss Me, Kate,” that opens Thursday at Attic Productions.

Attic Productions has scheduled a dozen shows of it summer musical that opens Thursday, July 27 at the Geraldine Lawson Center for Performing Arts in Fincastle.

The popular “Kiss Me, Kate,” with Cole Porter’s music and Same and Bella Spiewak’s play-within-a- play, comes to the Attic stage with a large cast of local actors and musicians.

Shows run Thursdays-Saturdays, July 27, 28, 29, August 3, 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12 with evening curtains at 7:30 and Saturday matinees at 2:30 p.m.

In the play, the offstage events and relationships both mirror and complicate the on-stage performances. Popular songs include ”Another Op’nin’, Another Show,” “So In Love,” “Wundebar” and a vaudeville version of “Brush Up Your Shakespeare” among many other familiar tunes.

The original music and lyrics are by Cole Porter and the play is based on a book by the Spiewaks that is based on Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew”

Katerina Yancey is directing, Richard Whitley is music director and choreographer is Kirsten Hamann.

Partial funding is provided by the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Attic Productions is located at 7490 Roanoke Road (Route 220), Fincastle.

Reservations are strongly suggested by calling  540-473-1001.

Volunteer hours at the box office are Mondays and Wednesdays 3-7 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Leave a message at other times.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for 18 and under and groups of 10 or more,

Katie Simmons – Wardrobe Lady/Padua Inn waitress/Ens.
