James Danny Smith, Sr. (USAF – RET), 78, passed away at his home in San Antonio, Texas, on the morning of July 10. He was preceded in death by his parents Watson and Thelma Smith of New Castle, Virginia; children Susan Irene and Michael Edward; brother Robert W. Smith, Sr.; brother-in law: Robert Secrist of Norfolk, Virginia; and sister-in-law Peggy Smith of Ellison, Virginia.

“J.D.”, as he was known to many, was a Vietnam War Veteran who served his country proudly for over 20 years with the United States Air Force. He continued serving his community as a Fireman and EMT with the Alamo Heights Fire Department as well as a volunteer with the Geronimo Village Fire Department. After retiring from Alamo Heights FD, he joined Sea World of San Antonio as an engineer with the Water Quality Control Department, “making salt water” as he often liked to joke. After 10 years with Sea World, he retired to his home in Western Bexar County.

J.D. is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Marilyn, and three children: Danny, Jr., of Lewisville, Texas, Debbie (Kyle) Lewis of Bandera, Texas, and Diana Rodriguez of San Antonio, Texas. J.D. is also survived by his four grandchildren: Eric Rodriguez, Christian Peters, Jazlynn Lewis and James Lewis. He is also survived by his siblings, Patricia Secrist, Sue (Dallas) Helems, Richard (Donna) Smith, Jerry Smith, Sister-In-Law Anita Smith, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends as well.

J.D. enjoyed everything outdoors and tinkering in his workshop. Hunting, fishing and hand carving walking sticks with wood from Virginia were all passions he enjoyed. He was also fond of spending time with his fellow veterans at the American Legion Post #300. He loved to tell a good story on others or on himself. He took immense pride in sharing the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren and he constantly surrounded himself with those who shared a similar desire to be of service to others.

The family would like to thank all their neighbors for their continuous love and support over the years, especially in these last several months.

In honor of his wishes, a celebration of his life will be held at Villages of Westcreek Community Center, 12395 Military Dr. W., San Antonio, TX., on July 21 from 7-10 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in J.D.’s memory to the Wounded Warrior’s Project or the charity of your choice.
