Newly elected Radford City School Board Vice Chair Jessie Critterton (left) and re-elected Chair Lynn Burris were chosen for one-year terms to lead the school board at Tuesday’s board meeting.

The Radford City School Board re-elected its chairperson and elected a new vice-chair during an organizational meeting, held Thursday.

Lynn Burris was re-elected to a third year as chair and Jessie Critterton was newly elected as vice chair, taking over for board member Adam Devries. Board Member Joe Hester also celebrated his one-year anniversary on the board and said he’s enjoyed it so far.

“I think the school board is on a really good path and I’m proud to be a part of it,” said Hester.

Also on Tuesday, Superintendent Robert Graham said the school division ended the fiscal year with a $600,000 surplus. The funds will be added to the division’s capital outlay fund, which pays for the debt service on Belle Heth School and various facility improvement projects.

Board Member Carl Mitchell reported that the Radford City’s Schools conceptual innovative learning and technology center could receive a boost from various grant opportunities through Virginia Tech.

“There could be some very positive alignment in the future,” Mitchell said.

The school board’s next meeting is a retreat set for Tuesday, Aug. 8.
