The visiting Blue Demons broke the game open when they outscored Salem in the second quarter, 22-7.
“I thought we played pretty well on defense,” said Salem coach Corbitt Hairston. “We allowed too many second and third shots, but the girls played hard. We’re a work in progress.”
Amanda Woody led Salem with five points and three girls had four, Deneja Hampton, Danielle Rich and JuWana Trent. Maddy Hall and Alla Daniel both hit three point baskets.
Salem dropped games to William Byrd and Pulaski County last week. Last Wednesday at Byrd the Spartans were overmatched by the Terriers, 50-28. Hampton had 11 points and five rebounds and Azaya Burnette had six boards.
On Friday at Pulaski the Spartans dropped a 63-30 game to the Cougars. Woody led the team with seven points and Trent had five rebounds.
On a brighter note, the Salem jayvee team is now 7-5. The Spartans called up half a dozen girls from the Andrew Lewis team after the middle school season was over and Hairston sees a light at the end of the tunnel.
“We have 29 girls in the program and only five are upperclassmen(one senior, four juniors),” said Hairston. “The future looks bright.”
As for the present, Salem was scheduled to play 14-2 Lord Botetourt in Daleville on Wednesday, but results were too late for publication. Then the Spartans play at home against Blacksburg on Friday, and at Blacksburg on Monday in a rare 4 pm start, with the jayvees playing at home against Floyd County on Monday.
The varsity continues on the road with games at Cave Spring Tuesday and at Carroll County on February 3rd, followed by a home game with Floyd County for the Adam Ward Classic on Saturday, February 4.
