Three girls lead Rockets to 17th place finish in state track

Three Craig County athletes scored at the Group 1A state track meet last weekend. The meet was held at East Rockingham High School in Elkton, VA.


Autumn Huffman scored in both throwing events with personal bests in both. Autumn was third in the discus at 114’4” and seventh in the shot put at 33’ 10.5”.

Olivia Menezes stunned the competition by finishing third in the long jump. Olivia came in seeded 11th in the field but jumped a personal best 16’ 5” to take third place.

Lynsey Taylor scored in two events for the Rockets. She was seventh in the 3,200 meters with a time of 12:52 and eighth in the 1,600 at 6:02.

These three girls scored enough points for Craig County to finish 17th among the 55 total Group 1A schools. There were 34 Group 1A schools to score in the girls’ meet.

Auburn High won the Group 1A team championship for the girls while Patrick Henry of Glade Spring won the boys’ Group 1A state championship.
