The top-seeded Spartans had a first round bye in the tournament, and Carroll County became their opponent with a win over Pulaski County Monday night. Tuesday’s semifinal was played on the Spartan Field artificial turf, about the only place you could play with a steady rain coming down the entire game.

Salem led 5-0 at the half and didn’t give up a shot on goal all night as keeper Katie Evans stood in the rain with nothing to do. Rachel Massey finished with two goals for Salem and Abby Mason, Haley Fedison, Mallory Edwards and Jessica Graham had one each.

The win gave Salem a 14-1-2 overall record and the right to host William Byrd for the Conference 24 championship on Wednesday night in Salem. The winner gets a first round bye and a home game Monday for the Region 4A West tournament. The loser is in the tournament but must play Friday at a site and time to be determined.
