The Salem High softball girls are on a roll. The Spartans won their sixth game in a row Tuesday, 5-0, as Haellie Gordon shut out Christiansburg at the James I. Moyer Complex.

Salem started the year with one win in six games, but since that time the Spartans have been a different team, winning six in a row. Their fielding has improved and they’re getting timely hits.

“We’ve been playing really well,” said Salem coach Sarah Beth Walton. “I always knew they could do it, but now THEY know they can do it.”

The Spartans socred all the runs they would need in the first inning on Tuesday. Sammi Haga singled and Liz Warren walked to get the rally started. They moved over on a ground out and Haga scored on a fielders’ choice by Gordon. Then Morgan Tennant and Lauren Moran both reached on errors as runs scored on both, giving Salem an early 3-0 lead.

From that point Gordon took control, fanning a dozen and walking none for the shutout win. She allowed just two hits in dominating the Blue Demons to pick up the win. Mackenzie Taylor and Reagan Owen finished with two hits each and Jose Bruner drove in two. Everyone on the team got in the game.

The win followed a 5-1 win over Pulaski County in Dublin last Friday. Gordon struck out a dozen again and pitched a two-hitter. Bruner had three hits and Gordon had two.

The Spartans will try to keep it going this week with back-to-back games against Blacksburg. They play at home against Blacksburg Thursday, then play at Blacksburg Friday. Next Tuesday, May 9, the Spartans will play at Cave Spring.
