Roanoke College right-hander Eli Sumpter has been named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Pitcher of the Week.
Sumpter, a junior from Charlottesville, went the distance against Emory & Henry, helping the Maroons to an 8-2 victory over the Wasps. In nine full frames, Sumpter gave up two runs with one earned. He scattered six hits and did not walk a batter while striking out four. For the season, Sumpter is 2-0 with a 1.50 earned run average. He has given up just 10 hits and fanned nine with one walk in 18.0 innings on the hill. Opponents are hitting .161 against him.
The Maroons are 19-8 after beating Averett University Tuesday, 7-2, and splitting a doubleheader with Hampden-Sydney last Saturday at Salem Memorial Ballpark. Hampden-Sydney took a 3-2 decision over the Maroons in game one but RC bounced back for a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
In game two the Maroons were down 3-0 before rallying in the fifth inning. Scott Ellis and Collier Donald walked to reach base and Will Decker tripled to bring them both home and make it a 3-2 game.
Decker would tie the game two batters later when he came in to score on a Drew Mikula sacrifice fly, making it 3-3.
The game stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth inning whenWill Black walked with one out, stole second and moved to third on passed ball. After Mikula walked, Black was able to score the game winning run on a wild pitch to give RC the walk-off win.
Craig Kiley (1-0) got the win for RC out of the bullpen after tossing two innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three. Craig Kiley, Kenny Mackovic and Forrest Wagner combined to give up just four hits in six innings of relief for the Maroons.
RC was at Lynchburg College Wednesday and Saturday they travel to Virginia Wesleyan for two.
