Freshman lefty Zian Honaker improved his record to 2-0 with three and a third innings of work, fanning three. Hunter Clifton finished up before the game was called due to slaughter rule.

Offensively, seniors Riley Fox and Noah Beckley both homered for Salem. Fox was three-for-four with three runs batted in and Beckley had two hits, also driving in three. Trevor Austin was two-for-two and Clifton was two-for-three with two run batted in.

Last Thursday at Kiwanis Field the Spartans beat Christiansburg, 4-1. Austin picked up his third win on the mound with a complete game, fanning six and scattering seven hits. After three games and 20 innings Trevor has an earned run average of 0.35.

Offensively, Jacob Dodd, Vincent Pinello and Joseph Quinn all had two hits for Salem. Vinny drove in two runs, getting a clutch two-hit to drive in a run on two occasions. Quinn had a double and an RBI.

Tuesday’s game was the first of five straight road games for the Spartans before heading into spring break. Salem is at Blacksburg today, at Lord Botetourt Monday, at Cave Spring Tuesday and at Hidden Valley a week from today.

“This stretch will show us what we’re made of,” said Salem coach Wes McMillan.
