SCHEDULE SET FOR SAEM TALKS
A series of free talks on topics of concern to senior adults will continue Monday, April 24, from 6 to 7 p.m. at College Lutheran Church, 210 S. College Ave. in downtown Salem. “Avoiding Financial Exploitation” will be the theme of Ann McGee Green, an attorney. The church is easily accessed from the rear parking lot.
The series is one of a number of services provided by Salem Area Ecumenical Ministries (SAEM) especially for older citizens and coordinated by Karen Adams, music director at the host church.
Other programs to be held for the remainder of the year are: May 22: “Exercise and Chronic Disease” by Stephanie Gillenwater of the YWCA staff; June 12: “Co-Housing: A New Way for Seniors to Live” by Paul Wyar; July 17: “Funeral Planning” by a staff member of John M. Oakey & Son morticians of Salem; Aug. 21: “Senior Accounting” by Ann Hodges and Jane Judah; Sept. 18: “Senior Remodeling for Comfort and Safety” by Chris Moore; Oct. 16: “Hospice 101” by Danielle Alexander of Good Samaritan Hospice; and Nov. 20: “Financial Power of Attorney” by Robyn Smith Ellis, elder law attorney.
ALZHEIMER’S GROUP OFFERS SUPPORT
Persons who care for relatives with dementia and any others needing more practical information on the condition may attend free a support group held each Third Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Joseph C. Thomas Center off Daugherty Road in the Glenvar area. It is guided by staff of the local unit of the Alzheimer’s Association, a national association to educate and raise funds to find relief from the disease which causes increased mental impairment mainly in elderly people.
