Freshman Dakota Henderson picked up his first varsity win on the mound Friday as the Craig County baseball team beat Montcalm. The Rockets took a 10-5 win in New Castle.

Jesse Brizendine pitches for the Rockets.

Henderson pitched the first four innings, striking out 10 and allowing no earned runs. Jesse Brizendine came on in relief and Chad Ryan retired the last two batters of the game to put the win in the books.

“Dakota pitched a good game,” said Craig coach Brady Price. “It was nice to get that first win under our belts.”

Craig had six hits, including doubles by Ryan, Dalton McPherson and freshman Christian Fisher.

The win followed two losses. The Rockets dropped an 8-4 decision to Narrows as they opened the season in New Castle on March 20. Ryan took the loss on the mound with Brizendine coming on in relief.

Brandon Swingle takes his position in the infield.

The Rockets had three hits, one each by McPherson, Jake Robertson and freshman Kyle Sloss. Narrows walked seven Craig batters but the Rockets struggled to get a clutch hit, leaving the bases loaded twice.

On Wednesday at Radford the Bobcats had too much firepower for Craig, taking a 22-1 win.

This week the Rockets have three games. On Monday Craig was scheduled to visit Auburn, Radford is here today and Auburn will return the trip to Craig this Friday.
