Glenvar sisters win state swim titles

Glenvar’s Madilyn Wheeler took 4th in the 100-yard butterfly and was also the 200-yard IM champion at the 2A state meet on Wednesday night.

Maggie Walker High swept the team championships, as expected, but Glenvar was more than representative for a young program.

Junior Madilyn Wheeler won the state championship in the 200 IM with a time of 2:14.63. Sister Cassie Wheeler, a senior, won the 100 Breast state title with a time of 1:11.14.

The Wheeler sisters combined with Carly Griffith and Abby Thompson to take a second in the 200 Medley Relay at 1:58.55 and a fourth in the 200 Free Relay. All the Glenvar boys and girls relays made it to the finals, along with individual swimmers Thompson, Emma Mullins, Austin Whitlow, Cassie Wheeler, Griffith, and Madilyn Wheeler. All relay teams and individuals were able to place and score points for the team at finals.

“It was an amazing night for the GHS swim team,” said acting coach Catherine Wheeler, who took over midseason when coach Keith Gaines had some health problems. “It has been awesome to see the growth and positive energy of the team this year.”
