The Glenvar boys’ basketball team got in a hole early and never could dig out in the first game of the new year. The Highlanders lost at home to Radford, 58-38, on Tuesday.
“It’s tough to come back from two weeks off and play them,” said Glenvar coach David Redding. “We just can’t simulate that kind of pressure. They’re very athletic.”
The Highlanders scored just 12 points in the first half, falling behind 30-12. They cut the lead to 14 at 44-30 after three periods, and got to within 10 a couple times in the fourth quarter but could get no closer before the Bobcats pulled away in the final minutes.
Guard Quinton Morton-Robertson, a sophomore, lit it up for 26 points for Radford. Logan Williams got hot in the second half and finished with 15 to lead Glenvar while Hank Conner had seven. Postmen Landry Gerbers and Noah Lovelace both got in foul trouble for the Highlanders as Radford attacked the basket relentlessly.
“We need to get some scoring from them, at least combining for double figures,” said Redding.
The loss dropped Glenvar back to .500 at 5-5. The Highlanders are at James River tonight, followed by four straight home games. Next week Glenvar will host Alleghany Monday, Auburn Tuesday and Giles on Thursday. Then, on Tuesday the 17th, Floyd is here for a fourth straight home game before the Highlanders return the trip to Radford on January 19.
“Unfortunately it’s the second game of the series that counts in the standings, and those are all going to be on the road,” said Redding.
