The Craig County girls were literally “out of their league” in girls’ basketball last week, but you’d never know it by the result.
The Group 1A Craig girls lost by just eight points to Group 3A Christiansburg, 50-42, in New Castle.
The visiting Blue Demons jumped to a 9-5 lead in a low scoring first quarter, but Craig played Christiansburg even in the second quarter, 13-13, and it was just 22-18 at the half.
The locals came out strong in the third quarter, outscoring Christiansburg 17-11 to grab a 35-33 lead with one period to go. However, the Demons finished strong and outscored Craig by 10 in the fourth quarter to take the win.
Four girls scored all the points for the Rockets, led by Savannah Looney with 13. Kaylee Pauley had a dozen, Tierrney Zysk had 11 and Taylor Sloss had six points for the Rockets.
The loss dropped Craig to 2-4 at the holiday break. The Rockets won’t be back in action until January 3rd at Bath County.
