Botetourt lifts outdoor burning ban

Botetourt County officials lifted the ban on open air burning Monday afternoon as much-need rain fell across the county.

County officials implemented the burning ban last Wednesday as high temperatures, an extended dry period and low humidity created extremely dry conditions and increased the danger of wildfires.

Assistant County Administrator Spencer Suter said Monday afternoon he had discussed lifting the burning ban with fire officials and the county administrator before doing so. However, he said residents should remain cautious with outdoor fires, including camp fires, and the ban could be implemented again if conditions warrant.

Suter said the county did experience several small fires in the week leading up to the burning ban, but none got out of control.

After several weeks with no rain in some areas, and only scattered thunderstorms late last week in others, a front moved through the county Monday that provided a least an inch of rain for most of the county. Some parts of the county got more.
