Hundreds of brook trout went from the classroom to the stream, literally, last week when students from three Botetourt schools and others from schools in Roanoke held graduation for the brookies the students had raised from eggs since last fall.

Students from Troutville Elementary, Read Mountain Middle School and Central Academy Middle School spent part of Thursday and Friday releasing the fingerling trout in Roaring Run and North Creek as part of the Roanoke Chapter of Trout Unlimited’s “Trout in the Classroom” program.

Besides releasing the fingerlings from sandwich bags filled water into the mountain streams, the students also got instruction in streamside entomology, fly tying, fly fishing and a history lesson.

A handful of fingerling brook trout are separated into sandwich bags so students could release them into Roaring Run.
