The Craig County girls will have three volleyball matches in as many days this week, including two at home. The girls were scheduled to host Liberty High on Monday and Highland County on Tuesday before heading to Bland County for a game today in Rocky Gap.
The girls are looking for their second win after dropping two matches last week. They hosted Bland and lost in three, 25-11, 25-8 and 25-15.
Annalese Zimmerman led the team offensively with four kills and defensively with 14 digs, while Laikan May added an impressive 20 digs. Holley Givens contributed two aces, a kill, and seven digs and Natalie Fisher recorded six assists.
Ally Calfee added seven digs, while Anika Zimmerman contributed a kill, a block, and two digs. Addisyn Higgens also chipped in a kill.
“The girls fought hard,” said coach Suzanne Crawford. “Despite the tough loss, the girls kept working hard and showed effort on both sides of the net.”
The Rockets were at Bath County for a Pioneer District match last Thursday and fell 25-15, 25-14 and 25-19. Calfee led the team with six kills, two aces, two blocks and seven digs while Fisher contributed seven assists and 11 digs.
May continued to work hard defensively with 15 digs, and Givens added two aces and eight digs. Mia Beller helped serve up four aces while Anika Zimmerman recorded a kill and a block and sister Annalese Zimmerman added a block and nine digs.
“The girls continued to show effort and fight throughout the match, working to put points together and keep themselves in the game,” said Crawford.
The girls are now 1-11 and hoping to finish strong, turning some of the close losses into wins.
“As we continue building this program, we are learning what works best for our team, making adjustments, and finding ways to grow together,” said Crawford. “These girls have put in great effort, and we continue to see improvement in our communication and teamwork. We know the wins will come as we keep working, learning and trusting the process. Now, we have to focus on finishing strong, staying consistent through the final points, and finding a way to turn these close sets into wins. We are building something, and every game is another opportunity to get better.”
