The Craig County softball team saw their season come to an end with a couple close losses last week. The Rockets wrapped up the regular season with a 9-8 loss to Highland County on Senior Day, then dropped a 12-8 decision to Parry McCluer in the Pioneer District tournament opener.
The Rockets lost to Highland despite banging out 17 hits. Kammie Fisher had a triple, Natalie Fisher had a double and Daileigh Donithan had a pair of doubles. Kallie Fisher was four-for-four at the plate.
Kammie Fisher pitched and deserved better. Kallie Fisher went 4 for 4. Kammie pitched a great game with 10 strikeouts. She struck out 10 Highland batters but was the victim of some poor defense behind her.
“Once again, defense let us down,” said Craig coach Elaina WolfeCarper.
The Rockets were in Buena Vista to open the Pioneer District tournament on Thursday of last week and drew first blood. However, the Blues answered with seven runs and put the Rockets in a 7-1 hole. The girls could have easily given up at that point but they battled back to regain the lead, 8-7, only to lose 12-8. Rae Stamper and Jenna Boitnotte were two for four and Holley Givens was two for three. Kammie Fisher had four strikeouts.
“I was very proud of the way the girls fought back,” said WolfeCarper.
That ended the season for the girls. The Rockets finished with a 1-13 record but lost a lot of close games.
“This was probably my most frustrating season yet, because I’ve seen what this group is capable of when playing to their full potential,” said WolfeCarper. “We saw flashes of that in games, but never consistently enough. We graduate six seniors this year so next year is going to be about rebuilding. Our younger players put in a lot of hard work this season, so I’m hoping to see that pay off next year.”
