The Craig County softball team broke into the win column in dramatic fashion last week at Narrows. The Rockets scored 10 runs in the last inning to pull out a 15-11 win over the Green Wave.
“It was looking like it was going to be another night of giving a game away on errors,” said Rockets coach Elaina WolfeCarper. “We were making great contact all game but our hits just weren’t falling.”
Down 11-5 going into the top of the seventh, things looked bleak for the Rockets when the first batter struck out. However, the Rockets captured lightning in a bottom at that point, stringing together a couple of walks and a series of singles while capitalizing on a few defensive mistakes to tie the game. Then, with a runner on third and two outs, Zoie VanDyke came in to pinch hit and singled to right field to drive in the go-ahead run. Kammie Fisher followed with a double to add another, and the Rockets continued to take advantage of opportunities with Natalie Fisher’s double extending the lead.
In the bottom half of the seventh inning the Rockets were able to make plays behind Kammie Fisher, with Kallie Fisher making a tough catch behind shortstop to end the game. Kammie pitched an outstanding game, racking up 13 strikeouts and allowing only three earned runs.
The win followed a 10-0 loss to Class 3 Northside in Roanoke County early in the week. “We struggled to adjust to their pitcher, only getting three hits,” said WolfeCarper. “Northside hit very well and played great defense.”
Now 1-8, this week the girls have Pioneer District road games at Eastern Montgomery on Tuesday and Parry McCluer on Thursday. The next home game is May 5th against Bath County.
“We’re hoping to carry this momentum into this week,” said WolfeCarper.
