From the June 1, 1994 edition of The New Castle Record
Craig County High School’s Jason Hutchinson placed second in the state competition of the Food Proficiency Event of the State Leadership and Recognition Conference.
The conference is sponsored by state chapters of Future Homemakers of America/Home Economics Related occupations (FHA/HERO).
Criag County sent three competitors to the meet-Hutchinson, Crystal Lane and James Radford. All three of them placed in the regional conference. Hutchinson took top honors in proficiency at that conference.
In the state competition, he was teamed with two students from other schools and the group had to prepare a meal from a menu which was not known beforehand. They planned the strategy and duties, then prepared and presented the meal to judges who are professional chefs.
The judging was based on use of equipment and tools, work habits, following, team work, cleanliness, safety, food production, taste and the end product.
Betty Garrett, the Food Services teacher at CCHS, said Jason did well and has a bright future in food services if he chooses to follow that career path.
