From the September 21, 1994 edition of The New Castle Record
The New Castle Garden Club met on Thursday, Sept. 1, at the home of Thecla Frantz with 12 members present along with one guest, Mary Jo Anderson. Much was accomplished in the month of August with the annual Flower Show at the County Fair. With the help of the Maywood Garden Club the Flower House was cleaned and staffed for the Fair. There were 133 entries submitted and the following individuals received the Best in Show: Sue Huffman was awarded the tri-color in Adult Artistic and Horticulture; Jessica Huffman got the tri-color ribbons in Youth Artistic and Megan VanDyke won in youth Horticulture.
The Ways and Means Committee reminded the members that it is time to start assembling our garden basket to be given away at the Fall Festival. Members were asked to bring items for the basket to the next meeting at Patty Smith’s on Oct. 6. Plans for the decoration for the Brick Hotel in the Victorian Period were discussed and Plum Givens made some suggestions on plant material to be collecting and gave some ideas for appropriate type ornaments.
Thecla Frantz reported that the Forest Service has requested that our club plant the large flower box at the welcome sign for Fenwick Mines. Some suggestions were made for appropriate plants and a committee was named. After some final business was completed, the meeting was turned over to Thecla who presented a delightful and informative program on window boxes.
