The Craig County softball team is 3-7 on the season after picking up a forfeit win over Bland last week. The Bears are forfeiting the rest of their games due to a lack of ballplayers.
The Rockets also had a game scheduled with Narrows last week and the host Green Wave won a 17-14 slugfest. Craig outhit the Wave, 13-6, and led 8-3 after two and half innings before Narrows scored six in the third and seven in the fourth.
“We gave it away,” said coach Elaina WolfeCarper. “ The game performance this season has not reflected the level of talent and potential that this group has.”
Aleah Owens and Neveah Hypes had three hits each for the Rockets and Annalese Zimmerman had two. All three, along with Daileigh Donithan, had a pair of runs batted in while Zimmerman and Hypes scored three times each and Kallie Fisher, Jenna Boitnotte and Owens crossed the plate twice. Owens had a home run and Hypes and Fisher had doubles.
Craig’s downfall was committing seven errors and walking seven more. Hypes and Boitnotte split time on the mound and allowed seven earned runs out of the 17 total.
The Rockets were scheduled to play Giles on Monday but that was rained out and will not be made up. They’re at Parry McCluer Friday to end the regular season and the Pioneer District tournament is scheduled for next week.
“We’re continuing to work hard in practice to clean up mental mistakes, improve accountability, and compete at the level that we know we can,” said WolfeCarper. “I know that these girls are capable of more.
