The lawn of Craig County Courthouse will be the center of “A Revolutionary Day in New Castle” this Saturday May 10, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Living history interpreters from Fincastle Company will be present in authentic dress to portray militia members and craftsmen from the 18th century. A scavenger hunt is being planned which will help modern day visitors interact with those from 1770. Prizes will be given to those who take selfies on their 2025 cell phones. See the Information Table on the courthouse porch for rules, period hats, and Oaths of Enlistment.
Running concurrently will be a Quilt Show by Craig County Historical Society. Quilts will be on display in the old General Store and the first floor of the Old Brick Hotel and refreshments will be served in the Genealogy Library. There will be no admission fee, but donations are always accepted by the Society. The public is invited to enter handmade quilts. They should be brought to the Genealogy Library on Wednesday, May 7 or an alternate time can be arranged by calling 540-864-7023.
One block away, Craig County Farmers Market Spring Opening will also run from 10 to 2. Music by popular performers Blue Connection and Ella Folk will be on Main Street. Bring your own chair. Kid’s-Made Market will be open for business on the opposite corner of Middle and Main Streets.
On the morning of May 10 is “Hooked on Fishing” sponsored by the Sheriff’s Department. A Demolition Derby will be at Craig County Fairgrounds that evening. These events will bookend “A Revolutionary Day in New Castle”, giving everyone something to do in New Castle on May 10.
