June is a time to reconnect, step outside, and enjoy the beauty of nature. It’s National Great Outdoors Month, a nationwide celebration encouraging exploration of America’s magnificent landscapes and the health benefits of outdoor recreation. Since established in 1998, every president and many governors, including Virginia’s Governor Glenn Youngkin in 2023, have officially declared June as a time to celebrate the great outdoors.

But what exactly does celebrating the outdoors entail? It can be as easy as stepping into your backyard, feeling the sun on your skin, and listening to a bird sing. Or, for the more adventurous, Craig County offers a plethora of options to truly commune with nature.

Nestled in the heart of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Craig County boasts a network of breathtaking trails perfect for all skill levels. The Appalachian Trail, a legendary 2,190-mile trek, traverses the county, offering seasoned hikers an unforgettable challenge. For a more leisurely stroll, explore the scenic trails at Fenwick Mines, featuring diverse flora and fauna.

National Great Outdoors Month isn’t just about hiking. Cast a line in one of Craig County’s waterways, a paradise for anglers. Bike along the backroads and enjoy the view, up close and personal. There is a wealth of wildlife to see including deer, rabbits, chipmunks, turkey, bears, groundhogs, and much more. There are cows, goats and horses pastured along the road and if you pick the right road, you may even find a camel or two. A map of Craig County detailing the trails and waterways plus the businesses who support the community is available at many locations.

The advantages of spending time outdoors extend far beyond the picturesque scenery. Studies show that spending time in nature reduces stress, improves mood, and boosts overall well-being. Immersing yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of nature can work wonders for your mental and physical health.

While June is designated National Great Outdoors Month, the benefits of spending time in nature are year-round. WSLS Channel 10 in Roanoke recently introduced the Blue Ridge Games, beginning August 12. Register your family then go on a camping trip, join a local hiking group, or simply take a mindful walk in your neighborhood park. “Hit the trails, bait the hooks and find treasures all over our region starting August 12th!” boasts the WSLS website. Every step counts towards a healthier, happier you and can earn points and prizes.

So, this June, embrace the spirit of National Great Outdoors Month. Step outside, breathe deeply, and appreciate the beauty that surrounds you in Craig County.
