Craig County senior Tyler Fitzpatrick tossed the discus 142 feet, five inches to finish second in the Region 1C track meet last week. The meet was held at Giles High School in Pearisburg.
Tyler qualified for the state Class 1 meet at James Madison University this weekend with his effort. He was second to Kobi Bonds of Auburn who won the event at 143’11”. Third place was over 10 feet behind Tyler at 132’ by Brock Ayers of George Wythe.
Fitzpatrick also competed in the shot put at Giles and finished 11th in the region at 40’6”, and two other boys from Craig County placed in the top 10 in the region. Caleb Fields took ninth place in the discus at 114’ 3” and Carter Calfee was 10th in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.14.
In the girls meet freshman Kailyn Jones took fifth in the 400 meter dash in 1:06.63. Jones also ran in the 200 and was ninth in 29.84.
Teamwise, the Auburn boys and girls swept the team title. Craig was 10th in the boys’ meet and Jones’ effort was good for 13th in the region for the girls.
