Two Craig County senior pitchers shut down the Bath County offense and a third senior went deep to lead the Rockets to a win over the Chargers on “Senior Night” last Thursday. The Rockets took a 13-2 win in New Castle.
Matthew Lucas started on the mound for Craig and went four innings to pick up the win. Lucas struck out nine batters to get the 12 outs needed and allowed just four hits and two walks. Fellow senior Hayden Reynolds then finished things out with a clean fifth, striking out one.
Craig’s three seniors in the game all had a big night. Clean up hitter Drew Duncan blasted a home run to ignite the offense, driving in two and scoring twice. Lucas and Reynolds also had hits and RBIs, and Hayden scored twice.
Another Rocket who contributed to the offense was Luke Potter, who was two-for-three with a pair of doubles and two runs batted. Marcus Donithan drove in two runs, Isaiah Wente scored three times and Cam Huffman had a run-scoring double. The Rockets had eight hits as a team and drew six walks to pick up the Pioneer District win.
The Rockets improved to 3-8 with the victory. Last Tuesday at home they dropped a 23-3 Pioneer District game to a strong Narrows team. Four different pitchers took the mound for Craig as the Rockets saved the two senior hurlers for the Bath game. Narrows had 11 hits and benefited from 14 walks and six hit batters. The Rockets had three hits, one each by Lucas, Reynolds and Jaycob Wolfe.
Craig was scheduled to play at Eastern Montgomery Tuesday, but results were too late for publication. The Rockets are at Parry McCluer Thursday and the last regular season game is in Roanoke next Monday against William Fleming.
