The Craig County boys will play two doubleheaders with the girls in the coming week as the high school basketball regular season nears a close.
On Saturday the Rockets will host Bland County for a tripleheader. A boys’ jayvee game will tip off at 1 pm, followed by the Craig girls against Bland at 2:30 pm. The Rocket boys will then take on the Bears at approximately 4:30 pm for “Senior Night.”
Craig will also have a girls-boys varsity doubleheader next Monday, February 5, at Highland County. The girls will play at 5:30 pm with the boys to follow at around 7 pm.
The boys have two games this week prior to the weekend. On Tuesday they were scheduled to host Eastern Montgomery and on Thursday they head to Buena Vista for a Pioneer District game with Parry McCluer.
The Rockets come into the week at 4-10 after splitting two Pioneer District games last week. On January 23 they played host to a tough Narrows team and lost, 83-28. The Green Wave is undefeated in Pioneer District play.
Narrows jumped on top of Craig early, racing to a 15-4 lead after the first quarter and cruising to the win. Matthew Lucas led Craig with 17 points, Hayden Reynolds had six, Luke Potter three and Talon Ritter had two points.
“This is always a tough matchup, and missing a week due to weather did not help,” said coach Ryan Frazier.
On Friday in Hot Springs the boys bounced back with a 74-54 win over the host Chargers. Craig had lost the previous meeting in New Castle by 11 points, but the Rockets were able to turn the tables on the Chargers Friday.
“A lot of credit to the players,” said Frazier. “We had a team meeting to try and get our play moving in the right direction. The boys bought in and worked really hard in the two practices leading up to Bath. Everyone on the team worked hard and did their job, it was a true team effort.”
Lucas and Reynolds combined for 50 points, Matthew with 30 and Hayden with 20. Hayden went 11 for 12 from the free throw line and Matthew went seven for seven from the line to help secure the win down the stretch. Jaycob Wolfe added 14 and Potter had 10.
“Having four guys in double figures just shows how well they worked together, and they did it on both ends of the floor,” said Frazier. “This was a great team win that showed a lot of heart, redeeming the home loss at Bath. Very proud of this win, but we need to keep this momentum heading into the last few games of the season and the district tournament.”
