The Salem High School tennis teams are partnering with the Roanoke Valley.
Pickleball Club to sponsor the 2023 Spartan Pickleball Fall Classic. The tournament will be held on October 21st and 22nd at the Oakey Complex courts on East Main Street in Salem.
There are doubles events in ages ranging from 14 years old up to 60 and older in men’s, women’s, and mixed divisions. Proceeds will benefit the teams, which are enjoying increased interest and competitive success. Registration for Saturday and Sunday is now open at http://www.pickleballbrackets.com.
In addition, there will be a round-robin pickleball social on Friday night from 6 to 9 pm. Local enthusiasm has exploded recently, indicated by the new pickleball club at the school garnering 85 registrants.
This is expected to become an annual event. Salem High athletic director Drew Barrett, the Salem Recreation Department and the Pickleball Club are working on this with Salem tennis coach Steve Lilly and Elisha Baba along with Jill Perez and Don Stafford.
