Cool fall weather has captured the attention of Craig County residents along with an opportunity to enjoy some fresh air. Instead of enjoying all that Mother Nature has to offer, locals have been more “cooped up inside” the last several months. The crisp air has awakened the spirits of many exciting things that continue to happen throughout Craig.
Many community events are popping up. As a result, Tourism Commission leaders of Craig County have joined area groups to promote “October 10 in Craig County” for a day of fun for everyone.
“Saturday, October 10, is shaping up to be a busy day in Craig County,” the leaders shared. “While some may head straight to one of our many hiking trails, others will take advantage of many shopping opportunities.”
Some of the events include:
- The Craig Public Library is having a huge book sale (fill a bag and go!), along with vendors who will be set up on the parking lot, selling crafts, plants and gifts
- Cornerstone Church Christmas Bazaar is having their final fundraising sale, where all gifts and crafts are reduced 50 percent
- On Market Street toward Craig City, (located at the old lumber yard), a craft fair will be open to the public. Anyone can reserve a 15 ‘x15’ spot for $20 by calling Jasmine Brown at (540) 580-0403. Brown wishes to help small business owners and other community members to sell their items since the canceling of the Craig Fall Festival. She encourages everyone to bring whatever they sell with the exception of alcohol or illegal merchandise
- Craig residences will host yard sales. Look for signs on Wagener Street, Holcombe, Marshall and others
Other larger events for the day are:
- Joe’s Tree Farm on Rt. 42 will be open all day for hayrides as well as a fun first for Joe’s Trees – a Glow in the Dark Corn Maze opening at 7 p.m. For more information, contact (540) 544-7303.
- Demolition Derby – Oct 10 – Craig County Fairgrounds at 4:30 – gates open at 2 pm – Admission $10 adults- $5 kids six and older and kids under five free. Mike’s Dog House will be on grounds.
Several hometown restaurants will be offering their personal shopping adventures as well.
The Tourism Committee added that, “Since an early fall is upon us and many people find solace and inspiration in the scenic beauty of Craig’s mountains and valleys, this day should be a great opportunity for locals and visitors alike to enjoy driving the Barn Quilt Trail while they travel between destinations, pull off at highway overlooks and explore our beautiful county.”
Others may wish to hike the shorter trails of Fenwick Mines or have a picnic under its large shelter. Families can enjoy the covered shelter at the Town Park too, which now has a basketball court and playground equipment for kids to enjoy.
Organizers are requesting that all patrons be careful and considerate by wearing masks, using hand sanitizer and being attentive when entering crowded areas.
Everyone needs a break and hopefully this day of fun will be one which allows family members of all ages to enjoy a little something during the day’s events, being able to enjoy the changing of the leaves as people view the majestic mountains of Craig County as well as the southern hospitality of its community.
