For many in Craig County, some things never seem to grow old, such as the Annual Old Salem Church Christmas Candlelight service.
On Sunday, December 1, at 5 p.m., the old country church’s doors will open again for its special wintertime service.
Coordinator Jean Bradley has heard many locals say that this event “jump-starts their Christmas season.”
Said one senior woman with a giggle, “I don’t care what else is going on, this is where I will be every year. Even if they have to carry me in.”
The church has no electricity or running water, so there will be the warmth of the stove and the ambiance of the oil lanterns and candles.
Refreshments will be handed out at 5 p.m., where everyone is welcome to bring their favorite dessert or snack and enjoy a time of loving fellowship.
This year, Pastor Cody Rader will be visiting and serve as the guest speaker.
A little reminder is that with no running water, there is also no bathroom. However, a quaint “johnnyhouse” is located behind the church, with lantern lighting, if needed.
A time of joyful singing will also take place as well as the lighting of everyone’s candle at the end of the service.
“Everyone is always welcome!” Bradley said. “Bring the entire family.”
