The Craig County Historical Society is pleased to announce a fundraising dinner will be held on Friday, March 29, at the Old Brick Hotel in New Castle. Baked ham, green beans, potato casserole, cole slaw, homemade rolls and desserts will be featured on the menu. Price of admission is $15 for adults and $5 for children. All proceeds will go toward final expenses of the reconstruction of the Holstein Cabin on Court Street. While winter weather slowed down work on the exterior, the inside is complete and ready to be furnished with period artifacts that will illustrate life on the frontier.
The stone fireplace is fitted with a wrought iron cooking crane fashioned by local machinist Barry Bradley. Both floors are open areas with pine floors and ceilings. A closet under the winding stairway provides storage on the first floor, and an attic is over the second floor. Wood windows from a log cabin restoration were donated by Ed Mattox and provide the only interior light. The back and front doors were handmade by builder Roger Davis with period hinges and locks.
The stones previously set aside for the chimney, but discovered to be missing last January have not yet been found. Efforts to locate new rock, however, are underway.
As the weather allows, work will commence on the chimney on the north-west side of the cabin. New landscaping is being planned by New Castle Garden Club to feature heritage plants which will encourage butterflies and hummingbirds.
