Freezing temperatures iced out most of the Craig County High School basketball schedule in the past week. The Rockets hope to have more luck this week with a full slate of games.
The Craig girls had a game at Covington postponed last Thursday, January 4, and at Auburn on Monday of this week. The Rockets were hoping to get in a home game with Bath County on Tuesday, and they’ll be at Christiansburg Thursday, weather permitting.
The boys team was scheduled to host Bath County on Friday, but that game was postponed with school out. The boys are planning to host Parry McCluer today, and on Friday they play at Eastern Montgomery.
The boys did get a game in last week as they played at Covington on January 3, losing 86-22 to a very strong Cougar team. Craig trailed 20-9 after the first quarter and the Rockets were shut out in the second period, 25-0, to fall behind 45-9 by halftime.
“Covington has a very good team,” said Craig coach Ryan Frazier. “They must have shot 70 percent on threes, and they were up 30 and still pressing. I was proud of our boys that they didn’t get upset about that, and just played the best they could.”
Dalton and Wyatt McPherson had six points each to lead the Rockets. Jakob Jones had five points, Caleb Todd had three and Noah Nichols had two.
Next week the girls host Parry McCluer on Tuesday, January 16, and on Wednesday the boys go to Narrows.
