The Craig County boys dropped their basketball season opener last week when they fell to Roanoke Valley Christian, 69-53, in Roanoke.
This game was a lot closer than the score indicates. The Rockets led at the half and the game was tied after three quarters, but the Craig boys wore out and RVC dominated the fourth quarter.
“Our boys were tired,” said coach Ryan Frazier, who had his CC coaching debut in the game. “We only had seven players and they were subbing three at a time. They kept rotating fresh guys in and they pressed us the whole game.”
Craig was further hampered when Wyatt McPherson, a strong rebounder, injured his ankle. Wyatt is expected to miss four to six weeks with the injury and that’s a devastating blow to the Rockets, who struggled on the boards against RVC.
“We got killed on the boards,” said Frazier. “I had to move Jacob Jones to the five spot, and he played hard but we really missed Wyatt.”
Caleb Todd led the team with 20 points and Dalton McPherson had 15. Dalton also led the Rockets with eight rebounds.
The Rockets next game is this Friday, December 8, when Craig plays host to Montcalm. That’s the second game of a doubleheader with the girls, who open at 6 pm.
The Craig County Middle School team is having a good season with a 5-3 record through eight games. The middle school team will play at Clifton Middle next Monday, December 11, while the jayvee and varsity teams host Alleghany in New Castle, with the jayvees tipping off the evening at 5:30 pm.
